January ...Dr Higham brought with him remarkable pictures from the new CT scan (Computer aided Tomography) that he has been working on at North Tyne and that is being installed at Wansbeck.
February...At our meeting on the 10th January Dr. Graeme Gillespie, a Clinical Psychologist, , gave us a talk, and some good advice on some of the psychological problems associated with heart problems
March....In place of Dr Lavender’s talk we had a quiz and a discussion on Fibre, rather than do a report I have made up a small Fact Sheet on fibre.
April..Dr Mike Lavender, Director of Public Health with the NHS Care Trust gave a talk on HEART DISEASE – FREQUENTLY FATAL AND MOSTLY PREVENTABLE
May....At our meeting on Wed. 4th. April, our speaker was David Catt a member of Borders Organic Gardeners. (BOG). His talk was entitled ‘Growing fruit and other good things in a small garden’;
June....Dawn Scott, a Public Health Nurse Consultant with Northumberland Care Trust, who gave a talk on Childhood Obesity.
July.....Our speaker for the evening was Jenny Garland,Jenny concentrated for the evening on Reflexology, f
August..... Mandy Thompson, Practice Nurse at Well Close Surgery, gave us deeper insight into aspects of her work, as Cardiac Rehab Nurse
September....Katie Kennedy. Katie is a State Registered Dietician, now based in the East Midlands and employed by Alpro Soya.
October....Dave Stephens Network and Communications Manager for ‘Warm Zone’, based in Blyth, but responsible for creating warmer homes throughout Northumberland.
November.... our speaker was Stephen Young of FISHNETS. If you look closely I have written of Fishnets, not in Fishnets.
December.... Our speaker for the November meeting was Jo Curtis, Disability Sports Development Officer for Berwick Borough Council.

March Our speaker for the first meeting of 2006 was Julie Holden of the Berwick Branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau
April Our speaker for the March meeting, on Wed 1st. was Jean Worth of Carers Link “Now who are they?” I hear you ask.
May Dave Redman who is a Paramedic and Team leader based at Berwick Ambulance Station.
June Our speaker on May 3rd. was Sally Scott who is one of three Primary Care Heart Failure Specialist Nurses
July Our speaker for the June meeting was Alex Spence. Alex is a teacher of Butayko, which is a balanced breathing group of exercises
August our last meeting, on 5th July, it was our annual walk with members of the ‘Walking for Health Group’

November We have had several speakers over the years devoted to relaxation. Why are they all so successful? Firstly they straight away bring a good atmosphere with them into the room; a sense of calmness
December Phil Harris filled-in for Sister Janet Punton who was unable at the last minute to be the speaker at our last meeting. Phil spoke about the scientific evidence for the value of a ‘heart-healthy’ diet

January & February, Health professionals Jenni Elliot and Diane Edgar crossed the Border in December to give us an account of the gathering pace of cardiac rehabilitation in Scotland. Are you managing your medicines Steve Gray, pharmacist , was our first speaker in 2005..
March Jae Jones from Patient Advice & Liaison Service, PALS, gave the talk at our February meeting. Did we know PALS existed? The posters are in most medical venues but do we recognise them?
April Our speaker at the March Meeting was David Shell, who is a modern Matron at Berwick Infirmary.Whilst listening to David's talk there is no doubting that he is very qualified, and experienced.
May At our meeting on 6th.April our speaker was Dr.Graeme Gillespie, a Clinical Psychologist, based at North Tyneside Hospital, and having responsibility for patients in Northumberland NHS. This year his plan for the evening concentrated more on relaxation as a way to help avoid stress. He was assisted by Dr Jennifer Gracie
June Our speaker on the 4th of May was Dr. Mike Lavender who is Director of Public Health for Northumberland. His main responsibilities are co-ordinating services for heart disease, stroke and diabetes and lead on drug and alcohol issues from the Care Trust
July At our June meeting the speaker was Dr P.D. Higham Cardiologist at Wansbeck General Hospital. He told us about the new drugs available
August It was stress management that Kathy spoke to us about, but as most of her time was taken up with a practical demonstration that everyone took part in
September annual walk and buffet with Berwick Walking For Health group
October Jill Hunter, gave a practical demonstration. The subject was yoga and fortunately there was not enough room for us all to get involved in full body yoga
November Phil worked for many years as a Psychiatric Nurse developing a special interest in sleep management whilst working at a Treatment Centre dealing with post traumatic disorders
December Dr. Higham, our President, gave a good informative talk, with slides, on modern drugs in relation to heart problems

January guest speaker Martin Manasse talks about what he did in relation to food, how he cooked it, other changes he made in his lifestyle following a heart attack
February Mandy Thompson, Practice Nurse gave us an insight into another aspect of her work, which is, Cardiac Rehab.
March Joy Richie Pharmacist, describes what services we may expect from our local pharmacies, both currently, and in the future.
April Graeme Gillespie, a Clinical Psychologist, gave us a talk, and advice on some of the psychological problems associated with illness in general, and where applicable to heart matters.
May Michael Redican, ably assisted by Emma. Michael gave us a talk and demonstration on various methods of relaxation, which included aromatherapy,reflexology, reiki and crystals.
June The speaker was our Honorary President, Dr. P D Higham, Cardiologist at the Wansbeck Hospital. He brought us up to date on new medicines and treatments. One such medicine, which is so new, its hasn’t got an easy sounding name yet, just its trade name, and that is Exanta(ximilagatran)
July If we were specifically asked, “What does Age Concern do?” I would imagine that our individual, answers would vary greatly, either because of personal knowledge, or the fact that we were guessing, and say something like, they help the old, but it’s all a bit more involved than that Marie did come to explain projects that are currently on offer from Age Concern,
August at our last meeting, we were lucky to have not one, but three guests. Only one spoke though, the other two made us work. Our guests were, Mandy Thompson, Practice nurse and Cardiac Rehab nurse at Well Close Surgery, and Michelle and Elaine from the Swan Centre
September Last month we didn’t have a speaker, we joined up with the ‘Walking for Health’ group, and 35 of us went for a walk. Not all calories are the same, a calorie from fat is not the same as a calorie from protein or carbohydrate,
October Dr. Chris. Plummer, gave us a very interesting talk on Pacemakers. You don’t need to have had a pacemaker fitted to have been interested in what he had to say.
November Micheal Redican at very short notice stepped in and gave a talk and demonstration on Aromatherapy
December Janet is the ‘prescription’ nurse , and has the job of keeping track of patients, particularly those with diabetes but also the much smaller number who need looking after in the 6 weeks after a heart attack
