Our scheduled speaker, Dr. Wood, was unable to attend October’s meeting due to family commitments, but luckily Michael had an ace up his sleeve, and at very short notice arranged a replacement speaker. This was Sarah Owston of ‘Abbey House Therapies’, who gave a very interesting talk on ‘The Bowen Technique’, also touching slightly on ‘Bach Flower Remedies’.

Sarah’s interest in ‘Bowens’ started some years ago, initially after receiving ‘Bowens’ treatment on her own frozen shoulder which was causing her considerable problems and pain. At the time she was a ground keeper on Hadrian’s Wall, and the day after her treatment she actually felt worse, but as she moved around during the day and doing her work the pain gradually eased, until all the pain subsided and she found she was more supple than she had been for a long time. As a result, a few years later, her interest in ‘Bowens’ was rekindled, and she decided to study and ultimately qualify in the technique.

‘Bowens Technique’ was developed in Australia by a Mr. Thomas A Bowen. Initially it was used to treat animals, and then used on humans. It is a technique similar to acupuncture but does not involve needles at all. The practitioner uses thumbs or fingers to make a series of precise, rolling type moves over the muscle. There are some short breaks in the treatment which allows the body to respond to the moves performed. The resting period are important to the treatment, and allows the body time to make subtle and fine adjustments which help to rebalance, relieve tension and reduce pain. The method triggers signals in the brain to repair areas in the body.

Sarah had read an earlier copy of our newsletter, where Phil had mentioned that statins which most of us take to help keep cholesterol in check can cause movement problems in the facia layer. That’s the layer in our body between the skin and underlying muscle. (And no, I didn’t know I had one either) but ‘Bowens’ is a very good way of freeing the restricted movement problems caused in this way.

This treatment can also be used to even out the highs and lows of sugar levels in diabetes. Treatment does not necessarily have to be concentrated on the obvious area of pain; this can take place away from the site of injury.

The first session of treatment will last for about one and a half hours, as medical history and well being has to be established. Subsequent sessions would be between ¾ and one hour.

Sarah did mention using Bach Flower Remedies, another discipline she is qualified in. Apart from the fact that they are used to relieve emotional / stress / and physiological problems, and can be used alongside ‘Bowens’, she didn’t add much further as to how this technique worked.

Sarah can be contacted at Avenue House Therapies at Grindon. Tel. No. 07815447664,

Thank you Sarah for coming at such short notice, and giving an interesting talk

Wally’s Yarn. (It is mine this month)

A man answered a knock at the door to find a middle aged person standing on the step.

He introduced himself as a Jehovah’s Witness, and asked if the man had a few minutes to spare.

The man, being polite, said the he did and invited the Jehovah’s Witness in. He showed him through to the lounge, asked him to sit down and make himself comfortable.

He excused himself and went through to the kitchen, boiled the kettle and made a pot of tea, put some biscuits on a plate, put everything onto a tray, and returned to the lounge.

He then said to the Jehovah’s Witness, “There, I made some tea now help yourself to a biscuit, sit back and relax, and tell me all about this Jehovah fella. Where are we going to start?”

The Jehovah’s Witness said, I don’t know, I’ve been doing this for 10 years, I’ve never got this far before”.
